Leaders and Leadership

I noted earlier how leader expect dedication. They demand you give your hundred percent to them irrespective of your competency. But I have also observed that leaders are habitual 'selectors'. They tend to surround themselves with good capable people. Look into any history books and you will find all great leaders had few good men. Those who had the best went
the farthest.

"A leader must have confidence in his own decision-making about people. He has to know he'll make the right decision eight or nine times out of ten, and be willing to accept responsibility for getting it wrong a few times." -Rudy Giuliani

While hiring good people is important firing the bad ones if they work for you or distancing yourself from non-performers (when firing is not an option) is equally important. This is very important because good leaders know intuitively that they have to constantly make room for more good people. If a leader has mediocre people around him the good people will not be attracted to them. They would somehow tie that to leader's capability to command.

Sometime people automatically think about authoritarian when they think of leaders. Nothing can be, however, further from truth. Good leaders have capacity to praise and reward. In fact the least resistant path any leader can take is to recognize and reward.
